Vivian Maier
Hi again. Here is a link to a very interesting photographer -- Vivian Maier. If you haven't heard of her, she was just recently "discovered" around 2007, when her massive collection of photographs was found at a thrift auction house in Chicago. She worked for years and years as a nanny, and also amassed a huge collection of street photography beginning in the 1950s and continuing through the late 20th century. Here's one of my favorites from the gallery on her website:
Clearly, a lot of her work is what you might call "street photography" -- candid portraits of people in urban settings. I guess for me it raises a question...where is the line between "urban landscape" and "environmental portrait"? Is it just a matter of whether the person and their expression are the predominant focus of the image, or is there a larger difference?
